First things first, when we say Lincoln Riley needs special attention for the Green Bay Packers, we're not referring to this week. Riley has a 13th game to coach this season, the Pac-12 championship game against Utah.
However, once that game ends in Utah, USC will need to focus on recruiting, bowl preps, the transfer portal and composition of its coaching staff for 2023.
How do the Green Bay Packers fit into this bigger picture? If you follow the football coaching industry and know why the Packers are a central figure in new coaching drama spawned by this weekend's breaking news, you'll immediately understand.
Let's explain why Lincoln Riley needs to be on the lookout for the Packers after the game ends in Utah and be ready to potentially make a move:
Wisconsin Football officially announces Luke Fickell as their next head football coach
Fickell's hiring, Badgers Wire noted, means presumptive coach-on-hold Jim Leonhard will not be Wisconsin's head coach in 2023. Leonhard's inner circle is reportedly "taken aback" by the move. He fully expected to be Wisconsin's permanent coach after Paul Chryst was fired.
Wisconsin hasn't treated Jim Leonhard fairly, but frankly there's no "good" or fair way to treat a coach when you're trying to hire someone else. I suppose Wisconsin could have told Leonhard it wouldn't keep him before hiring Fickell, but that wouldn't have gone over well. The Badgers wanted to remain silent about how they had handled their negotiations with Fickell. They wanted to enlist him as their new coach without giving Leonhard a chance to voice any grievances or giving competitors a chance to move at Leonhard. Get Fickell on board and then let Leonhard handle things from his side. It makes sense as a strategy, but it's definitely a tough ball and Leonhard obviously felt hurt.
Sometimes in this business, hurting someone's feelings is unavoidable. It's not ideal, but it's a reality.
No one thought USC would or could land a coach as great as Lincoln Riley at this point a year ago, but Bohn pushed for an opening and didn't assume Riley was unattainable. He courted him and went after him and caught him.
Wisconsin getting Fickell has the same sentiment for the Badgers.
As much as it made no sense for Riley to leave Oklahoma — at least given the historical precedent; Successful Oklahoma coaches don't leave OU for other jobs — it made no sense for Fickell to go to Wisconsin.
Fickell actually didn't go to USC because he said he and his family loved living in the state of Ohio. But a year later, Fickell travels to Wisconsin.
The only two jobs Fickell was reportedly interested in were Notre Dame and Ohio State. Notre Dame left for Marcus Freeman last year. Ohio State's position is not open, but may become available in a year or two. Fickell to Wisconsin shows he's not willing to wait a year or two for the Ohio State job, which is very surprising.
It's an unconventional move that defies industry expectations.
