The already broken relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William suffered more when Harry fell in love with Meghan Markle in 2016 - and William wasn't afraid to voice his reservations.
Historian Robert Lacey's new book, Battle of Brothers: The Inside Story of a Family in Trouble, extracted in this week's PEOPLE, explores the rift between Prince William and Prince Harry, including the growing tensions with Harry and Meghans Whirlwind relationship.
"The fundamental conflict was between the two men, who had known each other all their lives and never hesitated to tell each other exactly what they were thinking and feeling," wrote Lacey. "William was worried that his brother was moving too fast on his commercials - and he didn't hesitate to say so much when Harry started talking about getting in touch with Meghan pretty soon."
The author added, "According to another source on this pivotal and well-reported confrontation between the brothers that occurred sometime in late 2016 or early 2017, William asked his question about the apparent concern about Meghan."

It took 'Waity William' so long, of course, to support Kate for the monarchy. He'd auditioned her for a job all these years. So Harry couldn't help but wonder if Wills was really concerned about his personal happiness - or if he was again, as usual, thinking about the makeup and fortune of 'the Firm', whose boss he would one day be ? Harry's response was a harsh and insulted blow, "writes Lacey.

"Here we have a couple of brothers who loved each other very deeply - deepest and most sincere - but who could give as best they could when it came to a conflict over something that was very important to them," Lacey said in the book. "For William it was the future state of his monarchy - his sacred trust; while for Harry it was the love of the complex and fascinating woman that had finally made sense of his life."
