Winona Ryder Says Keanu Reeves Refused Directions to Verbally Abuse Her While Filming Dracula
Update June 25, 2020: Francis Ford Coppola made a statement clarifying previous reports that he had directed actors to Dracula for insulting Winona Ryder. Coppola said that while in the role he asked Gary Oldman to say "terrible and evil" things to Ryder and other characters during the filming.
"Although I think Winona is a wonderful actor, the incident she describes is not how it happened, and screaming or abusing people is not something I do as a person or as a filmmaker," the director told People about an explanation. "In this situation, which I remember well, I instructed Gary Oldman - as Dracula - to whisper improvised words to her and the other characters to make them as terrible and evil as possible. I don't know what I said but improvisation is a common film practice. "
A representative from Ryder also made a statement saying, "Winona and Francis agree and his memory is correct. He asked the characters in the character to say terrible things to her to help her cry after the scene. " Although this technique didn't work for her, she loves and respects him and considers it a great privilege to have worked with him. "
Winona Ryder remembered a time when co-star and friend Keanu Reeves stood up for them on the set of their first film together, Dracula.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, the actress discussed shooting a scene for the 1992 film in which she had to act in terror and shock. When director Francis Ford Coppola wanted her to cry more, he started shouting, "You whore!" to her off-camera and urged her male co-stars (including Reeves) to join him.
"But Keanu wouldn't," Ryder said, adding that her other co-stars Anthony Hopkins and Richard E. Grant didn't either.
She continued that she and Coppola "are good now", and the experience seems to have strengthened their friendship with Reeves, with whom she eventually worked on three other films (2006 A Scanner Darkly, 2009 The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and 2o18s Destination Wedding, which she admitted in the Sunday Times "got the worst reviews").
During the interview that was held from her LA home during the closure, Ryder said to the reporter, "I love Keanu. We are great friends. I miss him so much and it is hard because he is not far, just over there. " The interviewer noted that she "wistfully points out the window".
When suggested that she take a socially distant walk with him, Ryder replied, "That's the hardest part, I don't know, with this virus, can you just go over there and ...?" After being asked to do so by the interviewer, it apparently "lit up" and said, "I'm going to call Keanu!"
