‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Experiences Glitches For Some HBO Max Subs As DC Sequel Eyes Pandemic’s Best B.O. Opening

Warner Bros. does not report official box office results for Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day - various sources suggest this was a record breaking pandemic in the United States, which is catastrophic under normal market conditions - but various HBO Max users do it Social media, especially the Twitter handle @HBOMaxHelp, to share their complaints about streaming disruptions or problems logging into the app.
There haven't been any blackouts yet for HBO Max as the DC sequel tentpole came on duty from 12 p.m. EST yesterday. However, should they occur, it goes without saying when a popular title hits streaming (i.e. Netflix's two-hour outage back in 2016 when the Marvel series Luke Cage fell).

An HBO Max tells us this morning that "HBO Max has not experienced any significant interference".
A viewer on @HBOMaxHelp Twitter today reported having trouble viewing the Patty Jenkins-staged feature on a new Roku. A service that HBO Max recently reached an agreement with to annex the 46 million subscribers to this device. Roku was a key streamer device provider for HBO Max, the service that won deals with a number of pay TV providers, gaming platforms, connected TVs, and major hubs like Apple and Google earlier this year.
Even the New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis (see below) has problems with Roku but has found a workaround. Anecdotally, I'll say the first time I downloaded the HBO Max app when it launched in May, it wasn't a simple download on the phone and just entering my email address and password for the cable system. The app didn't recognize this and Spectrum customer support didn't know what HBO Max was or how it worked. I was finally able to activate HBO Max on my phone and AppleTV by creating a new username and password under my Spectrum account. Again, these are all kinks that HBO Max has to iron out if they're serious about being a streaming gamer. They might want to reconsider before putting a ton of $ 200 million worth of $ 200 million in theater tent poles into their service in 2021.
Others reported pure crash issues yesterday (see below), while other complaints focused on the movie not streamed in 4K, confusion over why it's not available on Amazon Prime, Hulu, or overseas (it's just not like that, that's not part of the deal). @HBOMaxHelp, which has just 3.3,000 followers on Twitter, is actively handling these direct complaints left and right, trying to resolve them through direct messages. I learned that HBO Max issues are due to users not restarting or updating their correct device apps. In the easy-to-use tech world created by the late Steve Jobs, it shouldn't be that difficult to download an app and watch Wonder Woman 1984 at home.
Rival distributors continue to voice their anger at Warner Bros and Sony's hiding of numbers in the Comscore checkout collection system (which allows distributors to dive into different markets and see how competitive ticket sales are). That blackout started when Warners released Tenet when theaters reopened during the pandemic. Why is that something to be upset about? Because it's all about responsibility and a second source of data that secures a studio's cash claim. How do we know Sony was number 1 last weekend with Monster Hunter at $ 2.2M, rather than Universal's Croods: A New Age at $ 2.07M? Just because Sony said it?
I was told that in 1984 Wonder Woman is on its way to posting the best 3 days during the pandemic which is quite possible in the lower teens and the 3 days of Tenet ($ 9.3M) and Croods 2 (9, 7 million USD). The number of theaters is 2,150. For DC fans with cinemas open, it seems easier to go to the cinema again. Again, 60% of the 5.8K domestic market is closed. The first Wonder Woman opened in 4,165 locations for $ 103.2 million on the first weekend in June 2017.
In 1984 Wonder Woman's rating for Rotten Tomatoes was dropped, falling from 89% on December 16 to 80% on December 22 to 80% as opposed to 93% in the 2017 edition. In a PostTrak report by Comscore / Screen Engine WW1984 received an 82% positive rating for the audience and a 65% recommendation. 91% of children under 12 were positive. Pic was 52% female, 56% over 25, and 32% over 35. The diversity split was 41% Caucasian, 25% Hispanic American, 22% African American, and 12% Asian / other. Think of those exits, we have a broken exhibition market that has closed several DMAs like Los Angeles, Toronto and New York.
In second place is Universal's Tom Hanks Western News of the World with a Christmas Friday of $ 1.05 million and an expected opening weekend of $ 3 million in 1,900 theaters. DreamWorks Animation's Unis Croods 2 ranks third at $ 550,000 yesterday and a fifth weekend of $ 2.07 million at 1,726 (-180), even last weekend with a running total of $ 30.7 million. Sony / Screen Gems' Monster Hunter is expected to rank fourth at around $ 1M for the -54% three-day period. Focus Features' new entry, Carey Mulligan thriller Promising Young Woman, grossed $ 270,000 yesterday en route to a $ 660,000 opening at $ 1,310. Lionsgate's Fatale at 1,168 is projected to gross around $ 600,000 at 1,168 by the second weekend, rising to $ 1.9 million, while Roadside Attractions' Pinocchio at 794 is valued at around $ 300,000.
