The picture was released on HBO Max in the US and in theaters this past weekend. The sequel was overseas on its second weekend, grossing $ 19.4 million from 42 markets. Combined with the USA / Canada, WW1984 achieved $ 36.1 million.
"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince and drive Wonder Woman 1984's strong opening performance, we're excited to continue her story with our real Wonder Women - Gal and Patty - who will be returning to end this long." planned theater trilogy, ”said Toby Emmerich, chairman of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
WarnerMedia reports on HBO Max that the DC sequel was viewed by "nearly half of the platform's retail subscribers who viewed the movie on the day it arrived, as well as millions of wholesale subscribers who accessed via cable, WiFi, or HBO Max other partner services. HBO Max also more than tripled the total viewing hours on Friday compared to a typical day in the previous month. “Some users of the HBO Max Help Twitter handle reported various glitches, either 4K streaming issues or poor Roku connections. Overall, we hear from insiders that it wasn't a Defcon4 meltdown, which means a complete failure of HBO Max.
"Wonder Woman 1984 broke records in the first 24 hours of service and exceeded our expectations for all major ad and subscriber metrics. The interest and momentum we're seeing suggest this is likely well beyond the weekend will continue, "said Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager of WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer, in a statement. "In these very difficult times, it was nice to be able to give families the opportunity to enjoy this uplifting movie at home where going to the theater wasn't an option."
The simultaneous release of WW1984 for theater and HBO Max was supposed to be a one-off, an anomaly given that 60% of the domestic market is closed due to the pandemic and the remaining exhibitors are starving for content. However, to the great annoyance of the industry, WarnerMedia announced that they will be releasing their entire cinema day and date for 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max as they have a tough year ahead of them. This despite the news that a vaccine is around the corner. However, it's not clear if Wonder Woman 3 is going straight to theaters and worship at the same time. Ahead of the holidays, Warners announced that three 2023 films were going straight to theaters: Coyote vs. Acme, Mad Max Prequel Furiosa, and The Color Purple.
