NICK BROMBERG: Christian Pulisic's goal in the 38th minute gave the USA a place in the last 16 of the World Cup in a 1-0 win over Iran. Pulisic had to leave the game at half-time after hitting the Iranian goalkeeper directly after kicking the ball into the net. The team said Pulisic has suffered an abdominal injury and it is unclear if he will be fit enough to play the Netherlands on Saturday.

The USA were the more dangerous team in the first half and it was a deserved goal. But Iran controlled the pace and possession in the last 20 minutes when Gregg Berhalter made defensive substitutions. While Iran had just four shots and one on target overall, they produced enough chances to make the final minutes of the game extremely stressful for US fans.
With Group A winners Netherlands at the start on Saturday, USA need Pulisic if he can try. Josh Sargent could also be in doubt after picking up a right ankle injury in the second half. In any case, the USA will be a clear outsider compared to the Netherlands. But the task will be much greater if Pulisic cannot leave.
