Police used water cannon and tear gas after being attacked by football fans who wreaked havoc in central Brussels on Sunday after Morocco's surprise 2-0 World Cup victory over Belgium in Qatar.
Dozens of fans smashed shop windows, threw firecrackers and set vehicles on fire.
Even before the end of the game, "dozens of people, including some wearing hoodies, sought confrontation with the police, endangering public safety," Brussels police said in a statement.
A spokeswoman said some fans were armed with sticks and one journalist was "injured in the face by firecrackers".
Around a hundred police officers were mobilized while residents were warned to avoid certain areas of the city centre. Metro stations have been closed and roads blocked to stem the spread of violence.
“I condemn in the strongest terms what happened this afternoon. The police have already intervened. I therefore advise against fans coming to the city center. The police are doing everything to maintain public order," the mayor of Brussels tweeted. Philip Close.
"I ordered the police to arrest the troublemakers."
