HISTORY: The skies of Hawaii's Big Island turned a hellish bright red on Sunday (November 27) as the world's largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, began erupting for the first time since 1984, marking its longest dormant period on record story ended.
The US The Geological Service says the lava is contained within the summit for now - but they've warned residents that volcanic gases and fine ash could drift its way.
Some areas of the Big Island were under an ashfall warning issued by the National Weather Service.

Rising 13,679 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Mauna Loa is part of the chain of volcanoes that formed the Hawaiian Islands.
It last erupted in March and April 1984, sending a lava flow within 5 miles of the island's largest city.
Scientists like Denison University's Erik Klemetti were on high alert after multiple earthquakes struck the area.
Erik Klemetti: "People expected Mauna Loa to erupt again just because it's erupted so many times, and that's a pretty long quiet period."
Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency has yet to issue evacuation orders -- it has opened two shelters on the island as a precaution, but stressed there are no signs the lava will threaten populated areas.
