Yankees' Aaron Boone explains decision to keep Gary Sanchez benched, plan for Jordan Montgomery
Yankees C Gary Sanchez
Gary Sanchez stays on the bench as the Yankees face elimination potential against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 4 of the ALDS on Thursday night.
Before the game, manager Aaron Boone discussed his decision to keep Kyle Higashioka in the line-up over Sanchez, spoke about expectations for Game 4 starter Jordan Montgomery, and outlined his bullpen plan.
"Another close call for me," Boone said of Sanchez. "Again, it depends on Kyle taking more advantage of these opportunities. I have a feeling he is offensive enough for us and is doing a great job behind the plate.
"Honestly, I felt like I could have gone with Gary and I would have felt good about it, but in the end, after just thinking about it and talking to some coaches a little, I felt that this was the way to go I wanted to go today. "
Regarding Montgomery, Boone said he had the ability to excel on Thursday night.
"Well, he's a really good pitcher, (I) think he had a really good year for us," explained Boone. "A couple of starts here and there that kept his line off of how good he was all season. I know he's a guy who is very hard to hit when he can own his delivery and dictate the number .
"We've seen it all year, the weak contact, momentum and miss he gets out of the zone and obviously commands his fastball early will be key and if he can do that I feel like him can go out and really give. " us a strong performance. "
While expressing his confidence in Montgomery, Boone said he could approach the Bullpen early - with Deivi Garcia, but Gerrit Cole is likely to be held back for a potential Game 5.
"Yeah, I mean we're going to be very aggressive," said Boone. "Obviously there is no tomorrow, we have to win today. We have a lot of people available down there. Obviously Deivi is down there for innings when we need it. So we'll be aggressive if we have to. But the hope is that Monty goes out there and can really assert himself a few times. "
