Transitioning Twitter account @POTUS from Donald Trump to Joe Biden next month will be complicated, but not as ruthless as some reports on Tuesday. Yes, Biden inherits new versions of the @POTUS and @WhiteHouse accounts with zero followers. However, users who followed these accounts under President Trump will receive a notification asking if they want to follow Biden's accounts in the future.
A Twitter spokesperson issued a statement explaining what will happen on January 20th.
“The accounts don't automatically keep their existing followers. Instead, Twitter notifies the followers of these accounts to provide the context for archiving the content and giving them the opportunity to follow the new accounts of the Biden administration, ”the statement said. For example, people who follow @WhiteHouse will be notified that the account has been archived as @ WhiteHouse45 and given the option to follow the new @WhiteHouse account.

As of Tuesday afternoon, @POTUS has 33.2 million followers and @WhiteHouse 26 million followers. It will be interesting to see how many accounts Biden has on inauguration day, although it will be difficult to say how many of his supporters are former Trump supporters who chose to follow the new president.
The situation contrasts with 2017, when former President Barack Obama's @POTUS account was transferred to Trump, along with the millions of supporters Obama built during his eight years in the White House.
Twitter clarified its process after it was reported earlier Tuesday that the Trump administration has so far "refused" to forward the account's followers to Biden.
