When we enter May we will have another supermoon to look forward to. The Blood Supermoon (also known as the "Flower Moon") will be released later this month. It is predicted to be the largest and brightest supermoon of the year, with a full lunar eclipse. Here's what you need to know about this supermon's origins, if you can expect to see it this month, and how to see it from the comfort of your home.
How the blood supermoon / flower moon got its name
According to the Old Farmers Almanac, the moon got its name from Indian tribes who called it "flower moon" because of the large number of flowers that bloom in May. The term "blood moon" comes from the fact that this month's moon coincides with a full lunar eclipse and the earth casts a shadow over this super moon, giving it a reddish hue.
The best time to see the blood supermoon
The flower moon will be largest on Wednesday, May 26th at 7:14 am EDT. However, the solar eclipse will occur earlier at 4:46 p.m. EDT, and the solar eclipses will be darkest (this is when you see the moon in its darkest red hue) at 5:45 p.m. EDT. This Eclipse search tool can help you find out when the Eclipse / Superblood moon appears where you live.
Here's how to see it live from home
You may not be able to see any stars later this month, but you can still see the supermoon live from your home. The Time and Date website will publish a livestream this Wednesday the 26th for anyone who wants to watch this Mays Blood Supermoon.
