Your tap water might not be safe enough to drink — here's how to find out

Food Flash explores the wild world of food news, from the health benefits of red wine to why dark chocolate is good for you.
Tap water or mineral water? That is the age-old question.
Before you even think about it, you should ask yourself whether your tap water is drinkable at all.
According to the CDC, the U.S. water supply is considered one of the safest in the world, but many Americans drink water that does not meet the standards of the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Contaminated drinking water has been linked to a number of health problems, according to Healthline.
For one, the consumption of lead can lead to neurological and developmental problems, especially in children.
Perchlorate, another chemical commonly found in tap water, can cause problems with hormones in the thyroid.
Eventually arsenic has been linked to skin, bladder and kidney cancer.
Fortunately, there is a way to check the cleanliness of your tap water.
The Environmental Working Group (EEC), a nonprofit organization specializing in agriculture, has created a website where you can easily check the water safety of your home.
If you find that your water contains contaminants, the EEC suggests installing a water filter to remove the chemicals. However, different contaminants require different treatments. Make sure you read what exactly was found in your water supply.
We all have the right to clean water. So invest in bottled water if necessary - and remember to recycle these bottles!
